      Richard was the son of Nancy Courtney and William Ward.

      He married Mary Matilda Rout on April 7, 1817 in Pickaway County, Ohio. Justice of the Peace Benjamin Cole united them in marriage.


      Richard and his wife were the parents of Fannie Ann Ward (1818), William Harvey Ward (Nov. 7, 1819), Sidner Jay Ward (Jan. 13, 1823), Martha Jane Ward (1822), Matilda Ward (1825), Mary Bell Ward (1829), Elizabeth Ann Ward (1836) and Sarah E. Ward (Jan 3, 1834).


      In the 1850 Census, Richard was enumerated as a farmer, living in Walnut Township, Pickaway County. Residing in the household, daughter, Matilda age 22, who was listed as insane; Sarah, age 14 and Elizabeth, age 11.

      Richard was a private in Captain John R. Lemmon's Company in the War of 1812
      He built the first sawmill along Little Walnut in 1811 or 1812.
