JOSEPH EMOND HOUSE ON EVANS MILLS HIGHWAY
In spite of the modern exterior appearance created
by the comparatively new open and enclosed porches this
native limestone house owned by T. Bernard Casey and
wife, Marion Casey, is probably approximately 120 years
old. It stands on the north side of the Watertown-Evans
Mills state highway at the east corner of the Sanford's
Corners-Pamelia road and is believed to have been built
by Joseph Emond some time after the mid-summer of
1828.
Joseph Emond, born in France about 1785 served
seven years under Napoleon including the peninsular campaign
of 1813, in which was the battle of Vittorio. He
came to the United States about 1828 and on August 25
of that year contracted to buy an estimated 55 acres of
land in the area where this house is. It is said that he
immediately set about clearing off the forest and on July
18, 1835, a deed of the tract was delivered to him by Moss
Kent, Plattsburgh, from whom he purchased the property.
He died Aug. 19, 1840, his widow, Marie Adelaide, and
children surviving.
A son, John B. Emond, who was born in France in
1820, is said to have later taken over the farm and increased
its acreage to a total of 300, becoming a successful
farmer. His wife was the former Marietta Meeker, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Barney Meeker, and their children
were John F. and Louis N. Emond, both of whom lived to
maturity and several years beyond.
Educated in the common schools of the district John
F. Emond worked on his father's farm until 1874 when
he purchased 160 acres of it. To this he later added a
couple of tracts and became one of the largest dealers and
pressers of hay in the county. In 1872 he married Matilda
Spohn and they had one daughter, Mary Belle Emond who
was twice married: First in 1909 to Walter Lashaw who
died in 1914; and, second to Anthony Webert in 1916,
from whom she separated in a few years.
Her father, John F. Emond, was one of the most
successful farmers in the town of Leray. He was a
staunch Democrat but for six years, 1898-1903 inclusive,
was supervisor of his town. He died April 26, 1909, and on
Dec. 9, 1912, his widow died. Their daughter, Mary Belle,
inherited the stone house and farm. When she died Oct.
25, 1938, the stone house, under the provisions of her will,
went to the town of Leray to be used as a town library,
there going with it a bequest of $500 for the purchase of
books. However, July 5, 1940, the town board passed a
resolution declining to accept the property on the ground
that it was in open country too far from villages and
would cost too much to maintain,
Anthony Webert, her second husband, died April 30,
1939, and on July 24, 1941, Walter Webert, Black River,
his administrator and sole distributee conveyed the stone
house and about two acres of land to Mr. Casey, the present
owner, employe of the New York Air Brake company,
who commutes daily to this city.

Judge Emerson returned Saturday from his annual fishing excursion to the Galloups and held a special term in his chambers this morning. The principal business was the naturalization of citizens, and an unusually large number was sworn in, tomorrow being the last day in which a man can be admitted to citizenship and vote at the November elections. The weather was not conducive to excessive court dignity and nearly every one was coatless. THere were 28 naturalized up to noon, their names, residence, and country of nativity being as follows:

While Driving along through Public Square about noon to-day over the pavements rendered greasy by the recent rain mixing with the oil and gasoline from numerous automobiles, Anthony Webert, a farmer from Brownville, met with an accident which cost him the life of his valuable carriage horse, a family pet. A short distance east of the Woodruff House archway the animal slipped and fell prone upon it's left side, sustaining internal injuries and dying upon the pavement within a few minutes. Thomas Burns, a veterinary surgeon, who was summoned, was able to do nothing for the dying animal.

Anthony Webert, though Chapman & Mott, presented a claim for $150, alleging that a horse owned and driven by him across Public Square on Aug. 6, 1910, slipped to the pavement and died almost immediately. It is charged in the claim that the city is responsible, because the city negligently permitted large quantities of oil to be drawn across said Square in a leaky wagon or wagons, from which the oil escaped to the pavement in large quantities, causing the death of the claimant's horse. Referred to the board of audit.

The city won out in the suit brought by Anthony Webert to recover damages for injuries to a horse sustained by falling upon a slippery spot in Public Square caused by oil being permitted to lay upon the pavement. After hearing the evidence of the plaintiff, Judge Reeves granted a motion of City Attorney Isaac R. Breen for a non-suit.
The oil was being delivered by James B. Wise in a sprinkling cart, which leaked and permitted it to drip upon the pavement, according to the witnesses sworn by Chapman & Mott, attorneys for Mr. Webert. A considerable quantity of the oil accumulated on the street and upon this Mr. Webert claims his horse slipped, sustaining severe injuries. Negligence on the part of the city was charged in permitting the slippery condition to exist upon the pavement.

LOST $105 IN CASH AND
AN ENDORSED CHECK FOR $35
________
PAMELIA FARMER HAD THE
MONEY IN HIS OVERCOAT
POCKET.
"I Will never carry a pocketbook again.", said Anthony Webert, a farmer residing in Pamelia, this morning, when he was relating the loss of $105 in cash and a check for $35. The check was endorsed and one would find little trouble in cashing it.
The las he saw of the roll of bills and the check was when he stopped in front of Sam Ray's store on Court street last night, and purchased some vinegar, while on his way home. Webert says it had been raining and he had the money in an overcoat pocket which he was wearing. He says he did not alight from the rig, but called out his order and the vinegar was brought out to him.
He says he though he put the pocketbook back in his pocket aftwerward and drove home, traversing Court street, Main street, and Bradley street. He never thought of the money again until this morning, but when he went to look for it, it had dissappeared.
Mr. Webert says that he was alone all the way home, and was sure that it had not been stolen.
He received the money for the sale of cattle yesterday and carried it to the city with him when he brought some of his relatives here after they had spent Labor day at his home.

I hereby certify, that I attended deceased from Mar. 5 1906 to Mar. 23 1906 and that death occurred on the date stated above at 3:20 pm. To the best of my knowledge and belief the cause of death was as follows:
Chief cause: Consumption
(duration) year
(Signed) R. F. Dates? Bates? Gates? M.D.
Mar 25, 1906 (Address) Brownville, N.Y.
Place of Burial or removal: Glenwood
Date of Burial: Mar. 25, 1906
Undertaker: D. E. Guilfoyle
Address: 39 Court St.
The name of Eva's mother "Pamelia Walts" as stated on the death certificate is incorrect. Eva Bigger's mother was Margaret VanBrocklin, who died in 1885. Cornelia Walts was the name given as Eva's mother's maiden name on the Marriage Certificate (Eva Biggers and Anthony Webert) dated January 9, 1901. The 1880 census shows a Cornelia (20 yrs old) as a step-daughter to John Biggers (head of household). It would make sense that Cornelia may have been taking care of Eva (then 10 months old) if Margaret (wife) was ill or incpacitated and unable to care for Eva.
