SHOOTING DUE TO ACCIDENT
YOUNG FARM HAND IS SHOT IN HEART
AUTHORITIES INVESTIGATE
Beleived Gun Was Accidentally Discharged After Boy Had Shot Rabbit.
Sheriff Michael Gleason today reported that his investigation of circumstances surrounding the death of Paul A. Weibert, 17-year-old farm hand on Henry Gardner's farm, in the town of Leray late Wednesday afternoon, was undoubtedly due to accidental shooting.
According to Sheriff Gleason the boy, who has been working for Gardner for some time, started out with him and a team to do some work. After leaving the barn Gardner stopped the team and sent Weibert back to the barn for a plank. While waiting for the boy he heard a rifle shot closely followed by a second shot and a scream.
Rushing to the barn Gardner found the boy lying on his back dying, says Sheriff Gleason. Dr. J. E. Jones, of Evans Mills, was summoned and pronounced death due to a bullet wound in the heart.
While the accident occurred at 4 Wednesday afternoon no report of it was made to the county authorities until late Thursday afternoon when Sheriff Gleason heard of it in a round-about way. He and District Attorney Jerome B. Cooper immediately went to the scene and investigated. They found that Dr. J. E. Jones, physician of record in the case, is also health officer for the town of Leray, and that he had not considered it necessary to report the case to the county officials.
Weibert was the son of Anthony and the late Eva Weibert. He was born in the town of Orleans. His father occupies a farm not far from that on which he was working. He is survived by two brothers, Clay and Walter. The funeral will be held from the father's home Saturday morning at 9 and at 9:30 from the Evans Mills Catholic church. Burial will be in Glenwood cemetery here.

It is assumed, said Sheriff Gleason, and there is no evidence indicating anything to the contrary, that Weibert took a 38 calibre repeating rifle he had in the barn to shoot a rabbit when he entered the building and that after firing at the animal he dropped or laid the gun down and that it was accidentally discharged, the bullet piercing his heart.
While the accident occurred at 4 Wednesday afternoon no report of it was made to the county authorities until late Thursday afternoon when Sheriff Gleason heard of it in a round-about way. BOY ACCIDENTALLY SHOT
Seventeen Year Old Farmhand Found Dying In Barn
Paul A. Weibert, 17 years old, was found shot in the farm barn of Henry Gardner in the town of Leroy [LeRay] wednesday. There were no witnesses to the shooting but every indication points to the fact that it was accidental.
It is assumed, that Weibert took a 38 caliber repeating rifle he had in the barn to shoot a rabbit when he entered the building, and that after firing at the animal he dropped or laid the gun down, and that it was accidentally discharged, the bullet piercing his heart.

The name of Eva's mother "Pamelia Walts" as stated on the death certificate is incorrect. Eva Bigger's mother was Margaret VanBrocklin, who died in 1885. Cornelia Walts was the name given as Eva's mother's maiden name on the Marriage Certificate (Eva Biggers and Anthony Webert) dated January 9, 1901. The 1880 census shows a Cornelia (20 yrs old) as a step-daughter to John Biggers (head of household). It would make sense that Cornelia may have been taking care of Eva (then 10 months old) if Margaret (wife) was ill or incpacitated and unable to care for Eva.
