John B. Bichet and Julia Moureaux came to this country from France, the former in 1828, and the latter a few years previously. They were married in 1836, and the same year bought a farm on road 34, in Le Ray. He subsequently added to his wealth by purchasing two other farms, one on road 33, and the other on road 34. They had born to them five sons and three daughters, namely: Louis V., Joseph J., Francis F., John, Mary J., Celia, and Peter. Mr. Bichet died February 18, 1886, and Mrs. Bichet January 29, 1866. Peter Bichet worked at home on the farm until he was 18 years of age, alternating his labors with attendance at the common schools winters, with one term at Kingston College. He removed to Croghan, Lewis County, where he conducted a custom boot and shoe store. The confinement in the store was not conducive to his health, and he sold out. He married Ellen, daughter of Michael Kelly, of Belfort, Lewis County, and returned with his bride to his old home in Le Ray. He soon after purchased of Noel Conway the old Lewis farm on road 35. Mr. Bichet has had born to him three sons, viz.: Ralph E., who died in infancy, and Lawrence J. and Adrien J., who survive.

Louis V. Bisha, proprietor of the hotel at Belfort, Lewis county, charged with carrying on an illicit distillery, surrendered himself to the authorities and appeared before the United States commissioners at Utica last week. He pleaded not guilty. Bisha and McNeal are now having their trial.

It has been surmised for some time that illicit whiskey was being made in this northern section, several persons venturing to say that it was made in more than one place. However that may be, there is one place of business spoiled for the present. Last Tuesday Deputy Collector Hadcock and U.S. Gauger Hastings, accompanied by Deputy Marshall Higginson, with the necessary warrants sworn out by Collector Kincaid, left for Utica for the search, reaching Belfort about 10 o'clock Tuesday night. They were rewarded by discovering at Belfort a six-barrel still, with mash tubs and all appurtenantces for distilling, bearing evidences of very recent use; also a ten-gallon keg of highwines in a building erected for the purpose near Bisha's hotel. Elisha McNeal, well known in this village, was the person engaged in making the whiskey, and he was arrested and taken to Utica. L.V. Bisha, the owner, escaped. The still and the tubs were removed by the revenue officers and shipped to the Collector in Utica. The building and barn attached, with two horses and a cow, were seized by deputy Hadcock, and a special officer placed in possession.

Louis V. Bisha's hotel at Belfort was destroyed by fire Friday afternoon. It was a mommoth building for that village and contained the largest ballroom in the county. The fire originated in a defective stovepipe, and was first discovered near the orchestra stand. It burned very rapidly and but few things in the way of provisions and furniture were saved. The building was insured for $1,000 by Sixbury & Hester, and the loss on liquors is covered by an insurance affected in Watertown. Several slight accidents occurred in the confusion to save the property.
