906 I am finding out now, the the name Van Brocklin simply means in the Dutch
language, from the town of Brocklin, or so I found out from a friend in
Holland, "Breuckelin" is the correct spelling. It has also been
misspelled so many times as Van Brakelin, Van Breaklin, and several other
ways too numerous to mention.
Vanbrocklin, Sander (I498)

907 I assume this information was abstracted (and then type-written on this single sheet of paper) from St. Matthew's Church, 1725 Rhode Island, N.W., Washington, D.C., 20036. That assumption is based on the hand-written note which appears on the page.
"From St. Matthew's Church, 1725 Rhode Island, N.W., Washington, D.C., 20036."
I am assuming that James R. Kelly, Jr. did the abstracting, as he told me he visited the church and found the information himself.

There was a Henry Biggers that married an Elizabeth Steede at Chipping
Norton on 13 Oct 1799. Sounds like it could be your guy.

911 I had written to Carolyn Perkins (Mrs. Homer J. Perkins) in November,
1996 requesting information on Robert Sixbury.
54 pages (copies) of information were mailed back to me as a result.
These pages (which appeared to have been contained in a 3 ring binder -
you could see the 3 holes on the copies) consisted of three groups of
documents:
1. The first group of copies (4 pages) was a short handwritten chronology
of Robert Sixbury's life. No author's name appears anywhere on the
copies. No sources of informtion were cited.
2. The second group of copies (34 pages) consisted of hand written family
group sheets with Robert Sixbury's family as the starting page. The
subsequent group sheets outlined all of Robert sixbury's children and
their families. No sources were cited, and no author's name was mentioned
anywhere on any of the copies.
3. The third group of copies (19 pages) consisted of copies of old
newspaper articles. (19 articles/sources in all) No references were made
to publisher name (excepting where the author of the article mentions it
or where it is self evident), date, volume, page so it is difficult to
determine exactly what newspapers they came from.

This is the letter she sent back along with the package:

2 January 1997

Dear Mr. Kelly:

I am enclosing all we have on the Sixbury line. Some of it will answer
your questions.

As for the picture---Mrs. George Tassey is no longer listed in the
telephone directory. I would imagine that the picture was either passed
down in the family or destroyed. I did not find an obituary for her that
would name descendants.

Possibly she just moved moved away.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Homer J. Perkins.

915 I think this is a carbon copy of the typed letter, since the letter is not signed.
The initials "RAS" at the bottom of the letter indicate that the letter was written by R. A. Scott, whose name appears on the letterhead of the paper containing the "Will" written by Charles W. Sixbery, May 24, 1937. R. A. Scott was the Superintendent at the time, according to the letterhead.

Dear Mr. Buckley:

I am hoping you can help me. I am trying to locate a marriage certificate or record for my Great-Grandfather (Christopher E. Fraley) and my Great-Grandmother (Mary L. Besha). They were apparently married in 1908 in Carthage, NY. I have previously written to the Carthage Village Clerk (see my previous letter below) and I have also spoken to the Town of Wilna clerk and both sources are unable to locate any such record.

Please refer to the newspaper article below for more details.

Thanks and have a great day!

LINDA M. WIER
Carthage Village Clerk

Carthage, New York 13619

Dear Linda Wier:

On September 18, I spoke with Laura Prievo (Carthage Village Historian) about obtaining a marriage certificate for my great grandfather and great grandmother, Christopher Fraley and Mary Besha. She referred me to you for more information.
The only information I have about their marriage was taken from the following obituary in a newspaper:

"C. E. Fraley Rites Set Evans Mills - The funeral for Christopher E. Fraley, 82, who died Thursday morning in the Jefferson county hospital, Watertown, will be Saturday at 8:30 a.m. at the Frederick Brothers funeral home, and at 9 a.m. in St. Mary's church, with Rev. John F. Pendergast, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in St. Vincent de Paul's cemetery, Rosiere. Friends may call at the funeral home this afternoon and evening. Mr. Fraley was born in Rosiere, May 1, 1884, a son of Peter and Julia Adams Fraley. He was married to Mary Beasha, Copenhagen, in 1908 in Carthage. The couple lived in Rosiere where they operated a farm until 1923 when they moved to Evans Mills. Mr. Fraley was employed by the Borden company and operated a farm until 1940, when it was taken over by Camp Drum. Mrs. Fraley died Aug. 12, 1937."

So, apparently, they were married in Carthage in 1908.

Does your office have a copy of the marriage record or marriage certificate? If so, I will happily send a check for the cost of copies and postage for mailing.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

923 In New York (U.S.A.) state censuses were taken every ten years from 1825-1875, in 1892, and then again from 1905-1925. This database is an index to, with corresponding images of, parts of the 1880, 1892, and 1905 censuses. Information available in this database includes name, gender, age, race or color, birthplace, enumeration place, year of enumeration, relationship to head of household, and number of years living in the U.S.

In New York state censuses were taken every ten years from 1825-1875, in 1892, and then again from 1905-1925. This database is an index to, with corresponding images of, parts of the 1880, 1892, and 1905 censuses. Currently this database includes the following counties:

?b?1880?/b? (approx. 27,600 records):

?tab? Rockland
?b?1892?/b? (approx. 364,000 records):

?tab? Broome
?tab?Chautaugua
?tab?Essex

While some state censuses may not be as valuable as others, depending on the year and amount of information recorded, they are still important sources and should not be overlooked. They can be especially useful for tracking ancestors in between Federal Census years. Since the 1890 Federal Census was damaged and destroyed by fire in 1921, the 1892 census is especially important as it is able to provide information that would otherwise be obtainable from the 1890 Federal Census. Information available in this index includes:

?tab? Name
?tab?Gender
?tab?Age
?tab?Race or color
?tab?Birthplace (usually this will be country, but may include a city and/or state)
?tab?Enumeration place (town and county)
?tab?Year of enumeration (1880, 1892, or 1905)
?tab?Relationship to head of household (only listed in 1905)
?tab?Number of years in the U.S. (only listed in 1905 and for people born outside the U.S.)
Additional information, such as an occupation, may be listed on the actual census and can be found by viewing the accompanying image.
?b?Where can New York state censuses be found??/b?
A lot of the state copies of the censuses from 1855-1905 were ruined in the 1911 state library fire. Most of the surviving schedules can be found with the county clerk, while others may be in the custody of the county historian. Microfilmed copies of the censuses can be found in other libraries, repositories, and institutions, such as the Library of the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society and the Family History Library.
Some of the above information was taken from Roger D. Joslyn, "New York," in ?i?Red Book: American State, County, and Town Sources,?/i? ed. Alice Eichholz. (Salt Lake City, Utah: Ancestry, 1992).

935 Jackson's Oxford Journal was founded by William Jackson, the Oxford University printer, in the early 18th century as a Saturday weekly. In 1795 the physician John Grosvenor became chief proprietor and editor. The first issue was published on 5 May 1753. Beneath the title of no. 1, page 1 was printed the apologia for the paper:

This paper will be more complete than any that has hitherto appeared in this Part of the Kingdom. For besides the Articles of News, foreign and domestic, in which we shall endeavour to surpass every other Paper, our situation will enable us to oblige our Readers with a particular Account of every Transaction relating to the present Opposition in Oxfordshire;....

Some fifty years afterwards, in the early nineteenth century, the newspaper, in common with others of this time, was more openly engaged in local politics, criticizing local government, and promoting local concerns. There was also commentary on national issues from a local perspective.

The paper was originally issued at a price of 2d. in 1753, rising to 5d. in 1856, and dropping to 3d. in 1882 (when its circulation was 8,000) and 1d. in 1898. The orientation of the newspaper was Conservative. It blended reporting of Oxford town and University events with summaries of events from further afield.

By 1880, the departments of the paper were: agricultural prospects, the week, university intelligence, city and council intelligence, Oxford town council, Oxford city police court, literary notices, petty sessions, general news, births/marriages/deaths, poetry, hunting appointments, markets, and country markets.

Some eighteen years later, in 1898, the coverage had widened to include: current agricultural topics, farming notes, gardening gossip, football gossip, news notes, a local review, Oxford county court, the woman's world, a regular, illustrated letter from London, district news public notices, cycling notes, cricket gossip, to correspondence, the ladies' letter, serial fiction, notes by an Oxford lady, and market news.

The amalgamation of the Oxford Journal with the Oxfordshire County News in 1898 afforded an opportunity for reflection:

In May, 1853, at the centenary of the Oxford Journal, the Editor expressed his desire to 'present a faithful mirror of the time, respecting the opinions of all, but at the same time cordially upholding all that we conceive to be dear to us as Englishmen, as lovers of order, and as faithful subjects.' The same desire animates us to-day, and we hope that our firm adhesion to our own political creed and Church principles, is consistent with, not merely tolerance, but respect for our opponents. We have never hesitated to express our own unbiased opinion on every public question upon its merits, and we shall continue to follow the same course.

The newspaper's name was changed to Oxford Journal Illustrated at the end of 1908 and it ceased publication in 1928.
